Another Delay for the Marvel’s XCOM Video Game

Midnight Suns, a turn-based tactical game set in the Marvel world created by the same team that created XCOM, has been delayed even again.

The game was first mentioned a year ago and was intended to be released in March 2022. While it will not be precisely the same as Firaxis’ XCOM series—there will be no permadeath, for example—the studio’s history plus the fact that this is a turn-based tactics game mean that those comparisons are quite usual when discussing this game.
Things weren’t looking so well the next time we reported about the game. Midnight Suns has been pushed back until the second half of 2022 by November, potentially due to “much of fan mistrust following a recent livestream of the game that displayed some poor graphics.”

It has now been postponed once more. According to IGN, during Take-earnings Two’s call earlier today, it was confirmed that Midnight Suns will not be released until “later this fiscal year.” Given that the current fiscal year doesn’t expire until March 31, 2023, a 2023 release, or one very late in 2022, seems likely.

The decision to postpone the game was taken “to guarantee the teams at Firaxis Games and 2K offer the greatest possible experience for our fans.” That’s fine! A postponed game is finally excellent, and so forth. And, with the pandemic and working from home, circumstances have been exceptionally difficult recently, so if it takes an extra six to twelve months to get this game in decent form, so be it.

It should be noted, however, that this delay only applies to part of the platforms for which the game is planned. The PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S editions will be available by the end of March 2023, with last-gen versions for the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch following later.
