Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Support Is Coming To Consoles

"We love our modding community and we want to support them."

Official mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 is now in the works, according to developer Larian Studios, and it will be cross-platform and console compatible.

Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian Studios, announced the news on X (previously Twitter), stating that work on cross-platform mod compatibility is now underway. The developer normally does not make such early statements until things are closer to completion, he added, but he made an exception this time. Baldur’s Gate 3 mods are currently exclusively accessible on PC via sites such as Nexus Mods.

“We’ve been working on a robust cross-platform plan for mod support to be released later in year,” Douse said in a statement. “We adore our modding community and want to encourage them. “It’s coming.”

The language of Douse’s post makes it unclear if gamers can anticipate the whole mod support system to be released this year or if Larian’s mod support plans will be publicised this year. GameSpot has contacted Larian for clarification.

In a follow-up post, Douse stated that its mod support mechanism “still requires work” and must be tested, and that he understands “it sucks when the game is updated and mods break.” With that in mind, Larian’s community team will begin to reach out and collaborate with modders to help prevent future problems, he explained.

In a post on the game’s official Discord server, Larian community strategist WombatMedic stated that the team is working with platform holders on a pipeline that will allow mod creators to release mods across multiple platforms, including support for mods related to “classes, UI, customisation, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics.” WombatMedic stated that the game’s next major patch, which is still months away, will contain “initial stages of modding support.”

WombatMedic, too, expressed irritation with the game’s frequent patches, which frequently destroy mods, as happened with Baldur’s Gate 3’s latest Patch 6.

“We know this sucks, we know you want to play with mods, and we want to make this right,” Wombat Medic was quoted as saying.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 6 was published on February 16, and it improved the highly acclaimed RPG’s kissing animations while also making some clever tweaks to dismissing party members and introducing new idle animations. Larian just added another major prize to their trophy cabinet, with Baldur’s Gate 3 winning Game of the Year at the 27th annual DICE Awards.
